After taking symbolic tiny bites of bread dipped in chicken soup, five University of Miami janitors and four students ended a 17-day hunger strike Friday and were quickly replaced by international union leaders who vowed to continue their protest and labor dispute.
Andrew Stern, international president of the Service Employees International Union, and Los Angeles-based Vice President Eliseo Medina donned makeshift crucifixes and took the workers' places under a tent front of the university campus in Coral Gables on Friday afternoon.
