Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Board OKs Union Vote

The Indianapolis Star reports:

The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Board agreed this week to recognize an employee union if enough eligible workers vote for it....

In a resolution passed unanimously Thursday, the seven-member board established policies for organizing such a union, including a requirement that at least 75 percent of the employees cast ballots in an election.

Board President Louis Mahern, who until now has resisted demands from employees that the board recognize a union, said he "worked with other board members" to ensure there were enough votes.
"It was a definite victory in the sense that this is the first step they've taken to recognize us," said Michael Torres, a library reference assistant and employee organizer. "We have not had any dialogue for months."
Employees first voted last year to join the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, saying they wanted more input into library decisions.
