University of Guelph Union Wins Ruling on Membership

Guelph-Mercury.com (8/26/2006) reports:
Faculty chairs and veterinary staff can now be part of a new trade union at the University of Guelph, the Ontario Labour Relations Board has ruled.

The university is simply moving in line with others across Canada, staff association president David Josephy said.

"As we tried to get into step, the university tried to push us out of step," said the molecular and cellular biology professor. "The University of Guelph in fighting us was trying to overturn the status quo in Ontario."

The union will be made up of 830 faculty members, professional librarians and staff veterinarians from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Animal Health Laboratory.
