Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) Announces Guide to Union Friendly Hotels

In light of recent labor disputes at hotels, the Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library Association (SRRT) today published an article in its September 2010 newsletter informing SRRT members about hotels and their current labor status in San Diego. The article encourages SRRT members to support unions and research hotels prior to making reservations for ALA conferences. UNITE HERE is an organization that represents workers in many industries, including hospitality/hotels. A Union Hotel Guide is available on their website.

According to the Hotel Guide, at this time, one 2011 Midwinter conference hotel is listed as “please patronize”: Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Two 2011 Midwinter conference hotels are also listed as under boycott: Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego and Westin San Diego at Emerald Plaza. The other conference hotels on the ALA 2011 Midwinter Meeting Hotel Rate Sheet and Hotel Map do not appear in the Union Hotel Guide. Please note that a boycott status may change at any time, as labor disputes are always under negotiation.

SRRT hopes that the knowledge of the Unite Here Guide is useful for SRRT members as well as all ALA members who travel to library conferences and for other business and recreational purposes.
